“Therefore, brothers and sisters, in view of the mercies of God, offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God. This is your true worship.”

-Romans 12:1

For a long time, I confused being good with surrendering to God. I would find myself thinking, “If I’m good today, maybe that makes up for the sin I committed yesterday, or even a few moments ago.” As if my good behavior could somehow balance out my failures.

But God never asked me to negotiate with Him.

He asks me to surrender.

Being holy and acceptable to God isn’t about creating a perfect version of myself. It’s about offering Him my whole life: my heart, my decisions, my relationships, my thoughts, my ambitions, and even the areas I desperately want to control.

And that can be uncomfortable…..

Because surrender means letting go without always knowing what comes next.

Sometimes, the hardest part of surrender isn’t trusting God with what we’re giving Him. It’s trusting Him with what happens after we give it up. We wonder what obedience will cost us. We wonder what we’ll have to leave behind. We wonder if God’s plan will look anything like ours.

But that is where faith begins….

God is not asking us to surrender because He wants to take something good away from us. He asks us to surrender because He knows what we cannot see. He is good enough to lead us through the things we fear and faithful enough to meet us on the other side of obedience.

And…being holy doesn’t mean never failing.

Sometimes we wander in guilt and shame after we sin or after we neglect the time we once spent with God. But holiness was never about becoming perfect.

God is perfect. We are not.

We are called to pursue Him, to become more like Him, and to continually return when we fall.

Grace has taught me that repentance isn't about beating myself up over my failures. It’s about allowing conviction to turn my heart back toward God.

Grace should never make us comfortable with sin. Instead, it should make us more aware of how much we need Him.

Romans 12:1 calls us to become a living sacrifice.

That means our worship isn't limited to a Sunday morning, a worship song, or a moment of prayer.

Our whole lives are the offering.

So what do I need to ban from the altar?

Plans?

Relationships?

Control?

Future?

Desires?

Surrender may cost something, but obedience often gives us something the world cannot: PEACE. Not necessarily a life without difficulty, but the peace that comes from knowing we are no longer trying to carry what was never ours to control.

So my prayer is simple:

Lord, make my life holy, not just my appearance. Make my decisions, relationships, thoughts, ambitions, and desires pleasing to You. Teach me to surrender instead of negotiate. Help me trust You with what I cannot see. Let my life be a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to You.

-Amen. ✨
